PSHE and RSE
Personal, Social and Health Education (P.S.H.E.) and Citizenship enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We encourage our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to the life of the school and the wider community. In so doing we help develop their sense of self-worth.
We place an emphasis on active learning by including the children in discussions, investigations and problem-solving activities. The children are encouraged to take part in a range of practical activities that promote active citizenship, e.g. a pupils’ school council, fundraising projects, a prefect/monitor system, role play opportunities, charity fundraising, planning and participating in special events such as Walk to School Weeks, Termly Masses, celebrations and develop their skills or projects promoting sun care or healthy eating, etc.
From the academic year 2020/21 RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) has become statutory for all children, whilst PSHE remains non-statutory. At St Edmund’s, RSE is taught within the wider PSHE and Science curriculum.
As a Catholic School, we explore what our faith teaches us about relationships. The teaching of RSE, at St Edmund's, is always rooted in love. We understand that every family is different and we celebrate the diversity of our school.
RSE objectives are taught through lots of curriculum areas but we also have a special focus on RSE during the summer using the TenTen RSE programme. Parents can access our RSE portal so that they can see what the children learning, allowing them to stay informed and be prepared to support their children at home.

As well as using specific teaching schemes for teaching P.S.H.E and Citizenship, the skills and attitudes are also promoted through other subjects e.g. local environment issues in geography, promoting recycling and composting in science. We have a School Council and an Eco–Team where representatives from each class give their suggestions on how we can improve these issues. The school was re-accreditated with its Green Flag status in 2016.
The school has the National Healthy Schools Standard after being assessed on its approach to all the aspects of health and welfare that contribute to the physical, mental and social well-being of the school community.
The school collected a range of evidence to support the achievement of this prestigious and wide-ranging award.
We continue to maintain the standards set and have extended our involvement in this area through cross curricular projects linking all areas of learning.
